Slab Buying Guide

Choosing the right tile comes down to durability, style, and how much maintenance you want to deal with. Each finish and material has its own look and performance level, so this guide helps you understand what to expect before you pick your slab or tile. It keeps your project aligned with your design goals and avoids surprises once everything’s installed.

Finish Options

Polished

A polished finish is created through grinding and buffing, producing a sleek, reflective surface with high shine. This finish highlights the stone’s natural color and character. It does require routine care and occasional resealing to maintain its gloss.

Honed

A honed finish has a smooth, matte look. It’s achieved by sanding the surface instead of polishing it. Honed stone hides imperfections better and doesn’t reflect light, but typically needs more frequent resealing.

Leathered

A leathered finish adds texture and depth to the stone. Commonly used on darker materials, it provides a subtle, tactile feel while still retaining a refined appearance. It pairs well with modern and rustic interiors.

Tumbled

A tumbled finish creates a weathered, aged look. Stone is processed with sand, pebbles, or steel bearings, softening edges and adding surface variation. This finish offers an old-world, natural aesthetic.

Choosing Between 2CM and 3CM Countertops

  • 3CM (1 1/4” thick) is the most popular choice for kitchens thanks to its durability and thicker profile, especially around edges.

  • 2CM (3/4” thick) is often used for vanities, tabletops, and shelves or when a slimmer, modern look is preferred.

Installing 2CM typically requires a laminated edge, which involves stacking an additional strip of material along the perimeter for strength and thickness.

Countertop Edge Profiles

Below are common countertop edge options. Many custom variations exist, but detailed edges usually increase cost and fabrication time.

  • Beveled Edge

  • Bevel Top and Bottom

  • Chiseled Edge

  • Dupont

  • Ogee
